A thought from a Republican

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

—-President Dwight D. Eisenhower, November 8, 1954

Was that only a little over 50 years ago?  Makes me shake my head in wonder.

    What a brilliant quote!
I was just reading the transcript for the BBC documentary “The Power of Nightmares” where they explore how that small group of Texas millionaires, et. al. aka “necons” developed and took over. They had the whole movie over at http://www.informationclearinghouse.info but I think Aunty Beeb put her foot down because it’s gone now except the transcript.
At any rate, this has been rumbling around in my head the last few days. And that quote is so perfect. 🙂

The same famous Republican once said this too. What a pity Bush and Cheney are his heirs!!
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.”
